The Haikulidays have failed
Until four years ago the Ancient Ones reigned. They cast a darkness across the land and in the midst of that darkness the people became languid.
Those that could muster the courage and the energy tried to appease the Ancient Ones. Those foolish souls tried everything from human sacrifice to confronting the gods themselves. These acts of hubris were attempted in vain as these mortals gave their lives for their efforts.
Then one day, in the darkest month of the year, a fellowship of seven heroes emerged with a plan. They would use the power of VERSE against the Ancient Ones. Five syllables, then SEVEN MORE, and five to follow. like barrages of arrows through the Ancient Ones's own hearts.
Through this noble act the Ancient Ones were banished for four seasons. The New Gods (nuts.com) were summoned by the very poetry that banished the Ancient Ones. In thanks the New Gods showered a bounty of snacks down upon the heroes for their beautiful verse. These New Gods promised this boon every year so long as these heroes pledged to write verse to keep the Ancient Ones at bay.
This year, however, the verse of the heroes was not enough to keep the Ancient Ones away. One hero did not write a haiku, and the Old Gods have returned for the year. We can hold out hope that this time next year we shall see the return of our beloved New Gods once more.
